24 hours in Bangkok- Sawadika
After a 2 hour nap, we found ourselves in the mall again as it was too late to do any sight seeing and we didn't want to venture too far from the hotel.
Feeling hungry again, we went to Cafe Fish at Siam Paragon and I could not believe how delicious the seafood pasta was! I did not have high hopes as the decor looked quite average and when the order came, the sauce looked too light, however, I loved it so much that I almost ordered seconds but we had some shopping to do!
Most department stores have a beautiful selection of Thai designers showcased alongside the more popular western designers and I was blown away by the creativity. Some of the materials they used were not practical for someone living in a desert, such as neoprene, and their hemlines were a little shorter than I'm comfortable with overall but it was hard not to be impressed by the artistry in the clothing.
I found a jumpsuit that I was eager to try so I walked up to the sales lady and asked her if I could please try it on, she pointed out that it was the new collection and continued her work. Confused about why she wasn't going to set up a changing room, I asked again if I could try it on. What I didn't know is that in Thailand the new collection usually only comes out in one size, so she just said "oh it's a Small, that's all we have," I repeated again that I would like to try it and this is when she slowly scanned me head to toe and said "for you maybe I can preorder a Large." And this ladies and gentlemen was when I realized that as far as Thai people were concerned, I was basically obese- she was saying Large but I could tell she was trying to be respectful. It was an interesting moment and one I don't think I'll be forgetting anytime soon but it's a good frame of reference in Thailand to go up a size or two when clothes shopping as they are really tiny, of course, this does not apply to international companies.
To close off our time in Thailand, we decided to dine at Nara, which had been voted as the best place to eat in the city for several years and was highly recommended by friends and family.
We were excited to try the tamarind prawn as well as the green curry and we were disappointed with both. The prawn lacked flavor and the presentation was not on par with the hype. The green curry was ok but I think I've had better green curry as take out. I can only hope that we happened to visit on an off day as I can't imagine anyone singing praises about Nara if we experienced their standard quality of food. The one upside was that the food came very quickly, a bonus for hungry tourists.
It was especially unfortunate to end our stay in Thailand on a flavorless note, but our spirits were quickly lifted at the sight of a sale in a nearby store.
